DCTweetup 11: On the Roof Recap

April 6, 2010

"Up on the roof!"

"The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire!"

"I see a mansard roof through the trees…"

The Drifters, Rock Master Scott & the Dynamic Three and Vampire Weekend have all musically expressed their interest in rooftops, but until you’ve actually experienced the roof scapes of Cleveland Park while socializing with fabulous and fun people on a hot April night, all you have is a song.

Last night our #DCTweetup brought together 88 spectacular individuals gathered on the roof of Cleveland Park Bar & Grill for drinks and conversation. All the elements came together – weather, location and of course, people – to make it an exciting and memorable event. People are still talking about it!

Whether you are a social media enthusiast or a curious surveyor, everyone was welcome! Thanks to all that came up on the roof for a wonderful night. We hope to see you again at one of our next ones! NOLA Brunch on 4/18 or the TEDxPotomac Pre-Party #DCTweetup (coming soon!)

In the meantime, if you like the event so much that you want to help us plan our next one (and the one after that) please consider applying to be our Summer Events Coordinator Intern. It’s unpaid, but you’ll have the opportunity to plan your own signature, end-of-the summer bash!

#DCTweetup 9: Zen & the Art of Tea

January 29, 2010

On January 28, 2010, Zen Tara Tea invited Sisarina's group to their brand new retail store for a tea tasting. What we got was way more than just a tea tasting.  Several local Asian restaurants, including TaiPei 101 and Tara Thai, provided delectible finger foods to complement the flavors of the many teas and Zen Tara's owner, Guy, enlightened us all with a short presentation about tea.  Most attendees left with new tea, new friends and a renewed feeling of Zen.

Teas at Zen Tara Tea change with the seasons.  We'll definitely be back!

During the event, host Guy was covertly filming.  He had this short video edited and up by the next morning.  Great work, Guy!

#DCTweetup 8: Bardeo

December 6, 2009

Bardeo, sister bar to Ardeo Restaurant, hosted an incredible #DCTweetup on Tuesday, December 1. The great selection of wine, eclectic array of beers and delicious small plates were just a small piece of the evening. The networking and smiling faces made it obvious that it was a successful event. Melanie received many thanks at the end of the evening for hosting such a helpful evening of networking while she reminded them that it was the people that made the party, not the planner.

The bar was packed to the point that the locals were giving dirty looks to the crowd of people swarming in their quiet local happy hour spot. Twitter friends became IRL friends and everyone left with a new connection or three. Now it's time to go follow all the people you met!

#DCTwixer at Hela Spa Ted Gibson Salon

November 24, 2009

On November 16, 2009, by all accounts, Sisarina's first #DCTwixer event was a great hit!

The staff of Hela Spa / Ted Gibson Salon were terrific co-hosts, providing a warm welcome, a beautiful space, terrific goodie bags, unbelievable discounts on services/products and free champagne.

Amanda and Payal, of Socialize Better, opened our eyes to some great opportunities for giving and helped raise money to provide furniture for a girls' dormitory in Togo through a group called Just the Roof.

While Melanie, of Sisarina, kept the crowd circulating and made sure everyone was enjoying themselves, Jadranka, of Adrianna Catering, gave us all something to talk about with her phenomenal food.

#DCTwirlies 6 - Wine Tasting 2

November 23, 2009

#DCTwirlies 6 was an intimate group of incredible people, some new & ready to party, others ready to chill out with a bottle on October 21, 2009. At the last minute, at the coaxing phone call of a man-to-remain-anonymous *cough*, we allowed men to join our little party and we have to say... they definitely made the party rock. Melanie made Skillet Lasagna and garlic bread, Josh brought delectable chocolate to sample and everyone else brought the wine listed below for a blind taste test. No one brought Boone's Farm this time so we were in the clear although the cool weather brought out a lot of reds.

#DCTweetup 5 at Cleveland Park Bar & Grill

September 11, 2009

#DCTweetup was finally hosted inside the District at Cleveland Park Bar & Grill. What a great venue for our first DC-based Tweetup. The owners gave us incredible deals on drinks, extended their happy hour to 8 including $3 beers, $4 glasses of wine and $13 bottles of wine along with giving our group 50% off all appetizers. The waitress and bartender were always getting more drinks and bringing out food without needing to be searched for showing us what great staff truly are. We felt very welcome taking over the front half of their bar and enjoyed an evening of fantastic networking and building new friendships.

The crowd was 80% new and 20% regulars as this was the first time we entertained the DC folks in their own territory. Tweeters from DC, Maryland and Virginia attended representing businesses of all types including executive recruiters, wine importers, web developers, hairstylists, Public Relations firms, and so much more.

Those who came together quickly realized that their hostess, Melanie, would not allow them to only speak to each other and were introduced to everyone attending. Introverts and extroverts alike were able to network and make friends with their neighbors throughout the evening.

The tweeting that followed told Sisarina that the event was a big success while everyone was asking about upcoming dates for future #DCTweetups. Although a #BagelTweetup is now set for the last Wednesday morning of every month at Georgetown Bagelry, a schedule of future #DCTweetups is being pulled together with local restaurants and will be announced soon.

Don’t forget to follow those you met at the event and if you were unable to make it, follow those you will meet in the future below. We look forward to your future attendance at #DCTweetup, #DCTwirlies and the new #BagelTweetup.

#DCTweetup 4 – Visions Restaurant

August 23, 2009

Our biggest #DCTweetup event so far included approx 50 fabulous DC Metro Area Twitter-folk who came out just as the rain decided to dump on Bethesda on Tuesday, August 18. Between the rain and the Red-line Metro delays due to another cracked rail, we realized that this was something worth braving anything for. Chef Tony put on quite the event by laying out a spread of hummus, focaccia and grilled veggies for our delight. The Hummingbird Mojitos were a huge hit again and the atmosphere was buzzing with excitement. Lots of new people came while some #DCTweetup regulars came back for more.

Not to toot Sisarina’s horn (alright, I think this is cool), but the event went so well that even avid-networker Steve with Driven to Excel commented on how this was one of the best ‘non’-networking events he’s ever been to. He said that the first question out of people’s mouths upon meeting him was NOT ‘what do you do?’, which is very typical for normal networking. Conversations ranged from faith to party planning to massage therapy to future Twirlies events. Even Michele & Gary sat down to have dinner partway through and got to know each other better.

At 7pm, Chef Tony gave away two $50 gift certificates and 5 $10 gift certificates to Visions Restaurant. The lucky winners are all ecstatic to go back and have a great dinner. If they go on Tuesdays or Sundays, they even get half-priced wine! (ANYone can get half-priced bottles of wine but they were there and won so they get an even better deal!)

The party lasted until 9:30 with many lingering on through midnight. To call it a success is an understatement according to many. Check out all the pictures from the #DCTweetup 4 event.

We’re looking forward to the next #DCTweetup in the District at Cleveland Park Bar & Grill on September 9 at Cleveland Park Metro Stop. In the meantime, start following all the people you met or the people you wanted to meet.

#DCTwirlies 2 – Wine Tasting

July 29, 2009

As a younger business owner and woman, I must say that it is sometimes a hard world to live in unless you have your girlfriends. Last night showed me what a group of incredibly talented and successful women can do to boost you into the clouds. This group of 20+ women were from all over the DC area and realized just how much they had in common with each other.

We started the evening out with homemade pizzas and a growing row of wine bottles. It was an evening of blind tasting which even included a bottle of Boone’s Farm. As the house started to fill up, the level of voices also started to fill up the house. A few people knew each other from previous Tweetup’s but we all had something in common. The food and wine kept pouring in until we had 17 bottles lining the counter. @CristinaMariaSE made a baked brie that was devoured and @johunt0311’s cucumber sandwiches were gone quickly. Mounds of cheese and loads of vino.

After 3 hours of really loud conversation and moving about the room to talk to everyone, I quieted the room and made everyone tell who they were, where they worked and a fun fact about themselves. This really got things flowing as people realized that those they hadn’t spoken with had similar interests. After this, the room got louder. I believe it had a little bit to do with the wine though too. The tastings were a lot of fun since no one knew what they were trying. @raelinn_wine, our resident wine extraordinaire had a blast tasting a swig of each and decided it would be best to just send out the whole list so we could buy the ones we liked. I’ve listed them below.

As the evening slowed down, the food was getting finished and people started to leave, I realized how many fantastic connections had been made throughout the evening. Geeky girls, foodies, web chicks, and the fabulous divorcee’s found each other and bonds were formed. Even today on Twitter, I noticed that the Twirlies were already following each other and helping each other out with things. Women are so encouraging to have around. How could you possibly ever have too many girlfriends? I’m looking forward to the future of #DCTwirlies events.

#DCTweetup 3 @ Georgetown Bagelry

July 15, 2009

What an incredible Tweetup! After last week’s tweets about @pulpologist coming in her undies and then other tweeps wondering about where to purchase fab undies for the tweetup, it became undies-optional. The tweets were beyond hilarious, spanning from thrift store and yard sale undie purchasing to tears of laughter rolling around the Twitter-board. @boones6433, @themamateresa, @sisarina and @abbeyk1005 joined @pulpologist for awhile. Turned into a hilarious Friday afternoon – all because of a Tweetup posting by @marybealladler found at: Bagelicious Blog 7/10/09 – I love this stuff!

Tuesday evening started out with the fabulous @MaryBeallAdler and @sisarina getting together to chat about her future marketing needs with the artsy side of Mary’s life. Shortly after, @dariasteigman came by and soon after the place was full of twirlies like @DBMC, @WDCGardener, @cedarwaxwing, @banjobunny, @pulpologist, @ddkurcfeld, @abbeyk1005, Laura at @LindaRothPR, and @LPSRocks. @jedsalawyer stopped by and was pronounced the token man for awhile until Guy & Methee from @zentaratea came by. @MaryBeallAdler’s husband stopped in for some chatting, networking and a quick bite to eat. Newbies @chairisy and @freedom2create got in on the action while @themamateresa and @gracecunning (concert-goers) ‘graced’ us with their presence. Laura of the @redaphidmedia team (from our first tweetup) got into the conversations quickly while newbie @EvilGenius0001 enjoyed conversations with all the fab tweeters. @putitaway stopped by in the last hour to chat with us before heading off to another Tweetup (she knows how to work the evenings in DC).

We all have to thank @MaryBeallAdler for being SUCH a gracious hostess by giving us all FREE FOOD and FREE DRINKS! High end sodas and juices were aplenty while she put out tons of teasers and made everyone custom bagel sandwiches and pizzas. By the end of the evening, she gave everyone who was left a bag of bagels to take home as a gift. Even @zentaratea gave away great tea and were so happy they joined us. The night was a huge success with talks of #DCTwirlies tweetups and the excitement of coming to another Bethesda Tweetup in August at a fab locale (still TBD). @zentaratea even posted a photo and blurb about us!

If you missed it, you missed a really relaxed, engaging networking event that even non-networkers enjoyed and are excited to come to again. @MaryBeallAdler’s generosity for letting us use her space along with just GIVING us so much food was beyond words.

#DCTwirlies 1 @ Co Co Sala

July 10, 2009

The #DCTwirlies met for the first Girlie DC Tweetup at Co Co Sala on Monday, July 6. Co Co Sala was a bit quiet on a Monday night, which we had hoped and were happy about. We were able to meet up with the Event Coordinator and she allowed us to sit around tables and enjoy delicious chocolate drinks and food. We were a bit disappointed with the overpricing of their drinks (which didn’t seem that different than other places other than the addition of chocolate) and the portions of their food but we had a fantastic time.

The conversations started out with why Twitter is so great, why iPhones are better than Palm Pre’s (they aren’t – hehe), and why Cynthia (@govpartners) has such an incredible husband. The laughs were contagious, @amyeandrews was her dry/hilarious self and made sure we were rollin’. We got around to introducing ourselves quickly and chatting with those around us.

After getting our food and sharing in the fascination of the small portions, we counted off and moved around to talk to other people. During that time we tweeted about what a great time we were having (see pictures of all of us on our phones) and tried to convince Jen (non-tweeter) why Twitter was so addictive, fun and helpful. (She’ll be on Twitter soon!) We counted off a 3rd time and continued to find more interesting conversations and then @marybealladler showed up and cracked us all up by learning that TweetDeck was available on her iPhone.

We finally got around to introductions and told each other why we joined Twitter and how our reasoning for tweeting has changed over the last months. @themamateresa ordered a beautiful chocolate platter and shared it with all (the platter was not as great as you’d think though). If you didn’t join us, you missed some great conversations, some delicious chocolate and fun girlie times. There will definitely be another in August – just need to find a restaurant who wants to sponsor us. Go ahead, tweet about it and see what you can find!

#DCTweetup 2 @ Visions Restaurant

June 10, 2009

The second DC Area Bethesda Tweetup was graciously hosted by Tony @cheftony at his American restaurant, Visions. As Visions is closed on Mondays, the Tweetup was a closed event allowing tweeps to meet without the worry of mingling with non-tweeps.

Robin Yasinow (@robinyasinow) and Teresa Thomas from Sisarina (@themamateresa) spent the evening greeting all who entered at the door with big smiles and cheeriness. Armband nametags came back out for the event and names/handles were displayed proudly for all to see. A few handleless folks came in to find out what all the buzz was about and they were greeted with open arms.

A special menu was setup just for the evening and the Twitter ‘duck’ had his nametag securely fastened to his fuzz. The Hummingbird Mojito was the most ordered drink of the evening, also happily enjoyed by hostess, Melanie (@sisarina). The food was fantastic between the chicken, hummus, and filet on a stick. Tony even brought out a chocolate truffle cake that was super delish!

By the end of the evening, we had more than doubled the first Tweetup and at 8pm there were still 15 people enjoying drinks, food and conversation! Half of the core group made it back for #2 and a few brought tweeps (@boones6433 even brought a newbie non-tweep!) For those of you who missed it, chat up those who made it to find out what a great time they had (it’s ok, you’re allowed to feel bad for missing it).

First #DCTweetup a Hit!

May 12, 2009

Lots of fun Tweeple came out to McCormick & Schmick’s in Bethesda on Monday, May 11 to meet each other and become part of a larger Tweet. The bartender, Josh, was mixing fantastic Sangria, Katie was on top of getting us drinks and they even brought us free appetizers (crab dip and calamari) since we were such a fun group.

The night started out with @sisarina, @circleTdesignand @dariasteigman chatting at the bar. We moved to a table when @bethschillaci and @boones6433 showed up. As the evening started turning more gloomy outdoors, we were lit up even more by @pulpologist, @turntablez, @redaphidmedia and @robinyasinow with @marybealladler showing up to top it all off.

Talk went from web technology to marketing to funny clients to fun things to do around DC to grooming. The tweeps who came are now following each other and the buzz has created a bigger following in the DC area. The end of the evening came with a storm and @turntablez turned into a chauffeur as @robinyasinow (with perfect hair), @boones6433 and @sisarina realized they’d have a tough time getting to their cars in a torrential downpour. All was not lost as @turntablez showed that he was a gentleman.

As the first Tweetup tweetple are now a close-knit group, we’re already planning the next Tweetup hosted by @cheftony at his restaurant, Visions, in Bethesda on June 8. It will be a closed event just for Twitter-folk with special blue cocktails and a fantastic 1-night-only menu just for us. More details will be coming soon. Start tweeting about it. For updated information, follow @sisarina.

Looking forward to tweeting-up with you soon!
@sisarina (Melanie)

Addendum: @bethschillaci posted a great blog about Tweetups – read it here: Why I Like Tweetups
