What Do You Stand For?
When you put together your company, you knew what you wanted to sell and how you wanted to sell your product or service. But when you started building your team, did you put together your core values? Are they as excited as you about Mondays? Are they honest to a fault? Do they give everything to your customers? Do they work hard? Are they meticulous? Writing down what you expect from your team and their interactions with your customers is another step in setting the foundation for your brand. Everything they do will be filtered through your core values, and finding the right people to fill your open positions will also use this as a filter.
The core values of any organization are those that form the foundation for how employees work, clients interact with the company, and the company is perceived. These should be the primary values that every decision and action is based. Core values underlie the work. They govern personal relationships, clarify who we are, articulate what we stand for, help explain why we do business the way we do, and inform us on how to reward.

HOW TO FIND YOUR CORE VALUES:
- Sit down with your entire team.
- Have everyone review the examples on the next sheet.
- Have each person choose their top 5.
- Ask each person to share their top 5 and write them on a large board.
- Once finished, go through every value and ask the team to vote on each one.
- You’ll find that some are similar, have the team vote on which is better.
- After voting, erase or remove all those without votes.
- From least to most, remove as many as you can down to your top 10.
- Ask people to rank their most important 1-5.
- Finalize your top 5-7 and ask the team if these values embody them.
- Sleep on it.
- After ruminating on the final words, pull your team together one more time.
- Finalize top 4-7 words.
- Post these to your website & print copies to keep in the office.
Your core values can be in the form of a sentence, a short phrase or a word. It’s up to you, but keep them consistent. Your final core values should not change, no matter the size of your company. Keep in mind that this is how you will make your hiring decisions, help your client choices, and set the tone for your work.
