The biggest part of leadership is knowing yourself.

By Melanie Spring

Growing yourself as a leader is not as easy as getting a degree and doing a job. It's about bettering yourself, taking care of others, and learning how to manage your emotional energy.

Brands That Rock's Brand Practice brought leadership trainer and coach, Heather Kaye from Invision, to talk about how to be a grow into being a better leader. Her definition of leadership is the management of emotional energy toward a particular goal.

"Anybody whose play is their work
is never going to retire. " - Heather Kaye
Some of my favorite notes & resources include:

The story of people building a cathedral. When someone walked by asking what they were doing, some said, "We’re laying bricks." Others said, "We’re building a wall." The last group said, "We’re at the beginning of building a cathedral." If you want to grow leaders, you have to be sure they're focused on the end goal, not the small thing they're doing now.

Journaling is a great way to see what’s going on in your life. What energizes you and where did you not step up? What made a positive difference?

Ego loves goals - by Danielle LaPorte

The bell is a great way to remind yourself to breath. Set an alarm on your computer to go off every hour and take a deep breath. One more little step to becoming a better leader.

Here's the full discussion about leadership with a leader who has seen it all in non-profit, for-profit, and government sectors and has lived to tell about it:

PS. If you want to know more about Heather Kaye's Executive Circle and how you can get involved, head over and check out the non-profit circle & the women's circle.
