Need A New Adventure?

By Melanie Spring

Don't call it a dream. Call it a plan.

If we plan too much, we miss the fun of the adventure.
If we don’t plan at all, we can end up missing the experience.

When was the last time you just wandered a new city?
Walking cobblestone streets with no phone, no agenda, no deadline.

What did you find?
The best restaurant tucked in an alley.
An adorable shop with an equally adorable shopkeeper.
The most delicious coffee shop & a conversation with the 85yo regular.
The overwhelming smell of baking bread as you wander past an open door.
A bridge with a view that makes you stop and breathe.
Being asked to take a photo for a stranger.

How did you feel afterward?
          Like MAGIC happened.
          Like you have a secret.
          Inspired to do something different.

As much as wandering is beautiful, in order to get out of the house for the experience, you have to plan a little to have an adventure. You’ll need a to do list, a packing list, a list of places you’ve always wanted to go, and a map to take you there. You know it’s not going to exactly as planned - and that can be scary - but that’s the fun of adventure.

When was the last time you reviewed your resume?
What if you got to rip it up and start all over again?
          - take different classes in college
          - study abroad for a year
          - travel and learn from whoever crossed your path
          - volunteer at a place that gave you more than you did
If you didn’t have any SHOULDs, what would you do instead? If no one said you HAD to do something, what would you have done? Your resume is now just a big blank piece of paper - write your own adventure.

How to plan for your next big adventure:

Go get a big piece of paper, a bunch of sticky notes, and some markers & separate the paper into 4 areas. Make sure you have at least an hour to get this started.
  1. Write down all the things you’ve always wanted to do - EVERYTHING. From big things like skydiving or public speaking to taking a class or owning a business. Even getting a raise or starting a whole new division.
  2. Write down the things you want people to say at your funeral. What they feel about you, how they remember you, how you touched their lives, what you did for them.
  3. Write down the things you need to learn before you die. The books you need to read, classes you need to take, people you need to talk to, everything.
  4. Write down a list of people who have accomplished the things you want to do. Think of your friends, neighbors, acquaintances, fellow business owners, politicians, pastors, parents… anyone.
When you’re done - step back and take a look at the whole thing. Look at all you have in your head - everything that could happen if you chose your own adventure. You now have a list of things you want to do, how you want to make people feel, and who can help you get there.

And you get to make that change now - with this new plan - or you can call it an updated roadmap for your life. In this space of infinite possibility, you allow yourself to find NEW possibilities.
